Salicylic acid hasn’t quite worked its way into the public vocabulary just yet. You won’t hear your sweetheart say before an errand, “Honey, I’m just running to get milk and salicylic acid…be back soon.” However, anyone who has ever suffered the humbling experience of a passerby’s double take knows that salicylic acid is one of the most common natural treatments for a variety of skin problems. The most popular salicylic acid products are aimed at acne, but they can also be used to treat psoriasis, warts, corns, calluses, and even aging…well, at least the wrinkles. I used salicylic acid to get rid of blackheads and the occasional nose-eclipsing monster during those precious years that callous scientists and health teachers refer to as adolescence (more like purgatory).

Salicylic acid products are applied topically in a variety of forms. There are salicylic acid gels, salicylic acid creams, salicylic acid peels…etc. Read my article on this amazing natural acid to find out more about its applications, and how it has been rescuing flagging social lives for many years.

Apple cider vinegar, or cider vinegar, is most often thought of as a cooking agent to add zest to otherwise underwhelming dishes, but cider vinegar uses go far beyond the palette. Cider vinegar has long been used as a natural treatment by the contentious and curious for a variety of common maladies, such as obesity, dandruff, warts, cleaning, sunburns…etc. Cider vinegar is also being researched as a method to reduce glucose levels in diabetics and, because of its blood thinning qualities, as a supplement for those with hypertension.

In North America, the words “baking soda” evoke the image of the mighty Arm and Hammer - which the company initially modeled after Mars, the Roman god of war, which is an apt analogy. Like the god of war, baking soda can defend your home against stains, odd odors to hideous, toe-curling stenches, fires, messes, and the degradation of time and living in general. Some people also use baking soda to bake…it leavens.

Sodium Bicarbonate, or baking soda, is about as versatile in the home as Michael Phelps is in water. Instead of masking smells with imitation lilac or romantic-yet-unnatural scents like “ocean breeze”, use baking soda. Baking soda neutralizes acids (the root cause of reek) and is super absorbant - it will eat the stink. These qualities, as well as its soft crystalline structure, make it perfect for scouring and scrubbing a plethora of surfaces and appliances. Unlike the cleaning products you’ll find on store shelves, baking soda is completely harmless. You can eat it of course, and brush your teeth with it, and I add a pinch to my coffee to keep my stomach from dissolving itself. Baking soda’s uses are many, and the benefits are too. It’s cheap, effective, and environmentally friendly - and when you use it, the god of war smiles upon you.

Okay, I’ll be honest. I’ve never had a professional massage. There are two main reasons for this, and the first is that I’m almost unreasonably tight with my money, especially when it comes to taking care of myself. Earlier this year, I got a pixie haircut that gradually grew out into a semi-mullet, and I made that mullet work for me for a couple of months before I broke down and spent the money on a new cut. So I’d really have to wear myself down before I’d pay for a massage. But that’s my loss, because–and, strangely enough, this is part of the other reason I’ve never had a real massage–massages work. They work against a variety of aches and pains, they work to elevate mood and improve sleep, they work to boost the immune system, lower blood pressure, and help addicts overcome their vices. The benefits of massage are actually pretty amazing.

So I won’t get a massage because I’m afraid it would make me feel so good that I would have to have massages on a regular basis forever afterward. But that’s just my crazy talking. You should read my latest article, and then go get yourself a nice massage.

If you consider that acupuncture has been a central element of the Chinese medical tradition for thousands of years–how many thousands, exactly, is a matter of debate–it hardly seems fair to refer to it as “alternative medicine.” But because Western scientists are limited in their ability to research acupuncture, and because when they try, they don’t all agree on all of the results all the time, acupuncture is probably stuck with the “alternative” label, at least for a while. It’s too bad, too, because a lot of the good research we have so far suggests that acupuncture is a very good treatment for quite a few common ailments, ranging from joint and muscle pain to gastrointestinal disorders and from headaches to PMS. And that’s really just scratching the surface of what it can do. Check out my article to see if acupuncture can help you fix what’s wrong with you. Odds are, it can.

Okay, so we all know oatmeal is good for us, and we all tend to do with that information what we will. Some of us eat it every day for breakfast, some of us eat it only when we feel like it, and some wouldn’t touch the stuff even if it gave us the power to move small objects with our minds. My first college roommate wrinkled her nose in disgust every time I microwaved a bowl of what she called “mealy oats” in our dorm room. Myself, I’m just an occasional oatmeal eater, and those every day people have my respect, because eating oatmeal keeps us healthy in some of the most fundamental ways, from our hearts to our guts to our, well, beer guts. And that’s just eating it. Added to a bath or body lotion, oatmeal has the power to make skin stop itching, stop stinging, or start being soft and supple. You can read about all of oatmeal’s benefits here, but make sure you have oats in the cuboard, because you’re going to want a big bowl of them in the morning.

Let’s face it, vinegar is cheap. No, not cheap like a date of frozen pizza, Nintendo and a six-pack of Natural Ice, but cheap like “three dollars a gallon” cheap. It’s safe, organic, all natural, made from renewable resources, safe to use around children, pets and those with asthma and allergies, and did I mention that it’s cheap? White vinegar can be used to clean things, get rid of warts, treat Athlete’s Foot, get rid of skunk smell on your pets, treat sunburn and other mild burns, and get rid of mold, fungus, bacteria and some strains of viruses.

Not only was I a very poor college student, but I was one living in the small and yet overpoweringly smelly dorms, one with asthma, seasonal allergies, allergies to fragrances found in many harsh cleaning products, sensitive skin prone to acne, rashes and sunburn, and I even had braces. Okay, so the braces don’t have anything to do with vinegar, but I thought you should know anyways. And what did I use to cook, to clean, to treat mild burns and to make miniature volcanos in my dorm room? That’s right, I used vinegar. And so should you. Read about it here, in my article.

There is good reason why the Promised Land was known as the Land of Milk and Honey. Okay, so Land of the Free iPod may have a little bit more pull nowadays, but back then it was all about the honey love. Forget the draw of that which can be squeezed from a lactating goat– honey has many health and beauty benefits that kept people wandering the desert, searching for the place where honey was plentiful. And there’s no lack of reasons why: honey is a common natural treatment. Honey can be used as an all natural acne treatment, as an organic facial or organic body scrub. It will get rid of blemishes, shrink pores, and get rid of acne. It can also be a healthy substitute to children’s cold and cough medicine, relieve upper respiratory infection symptoms, get rid of a sore throat and actually help get rid of bacteria and viruses. Read my article to find out more.

Forget Brad Pitt. I think garlic is God’s gift. And not just to women and gay men. To everyone. That’s because this fragrant little flavor bomb is more than just a delicious addition to almost any food; it’s also remarkably healthy. Garlic has had a place in herbal medicine for centuries, and it’s starting to earn a reputation as a helpful supplement to conventional Western medicine.

Garlic’s many uses actually range beyond cooking and internal medicine, and it isn’t even necessary to eat garlic to get some of its benefits. For instance, some people swear by garlic for repelling mosquitoes and other unwanted insects. Others apply it directly to wounds or fungal infections like athlete’s foot, to take advantage of garlic’s natural antimicrobial properties. But if you simply use garlic the usual way–in your dinner–it could be a small, easy step toward preventing heart disease, colds and flu, and maybe even cancer. And since garlic tastes so good and has almost no side effects beyond a slightly funky smell, why wouldn’t you throw some into your spaghetti sauce?

Fish. Love it or hate it, right? I happen to fall into the “love it” category, but I still didn’t eat my doctor-recommended two servings last week. Or the week before. Or the week before that. And I’m willing to bet that most of my fellow Americans didn’t get theirs, either. There’s always some reason not to eat fish: you think it’s stinky and unfit for human consumption, you don’t know how to cook it, or you’re (prudently) concerned about the pollutants and heavy metals it probably absorbed during its swimming days.

The problem with leaving fish out of your diet, no matter how valid the reason, is that oily fish is the most concentrated source of omega-3 fatty acids in the natural world, and omega-3 acids can do amazing things for our health. For example, water-locked, fish-eating Japan has a far lower rate of heart disease than cheeseburger-chowing America, partly because we tend to be deficient in omega-3 and they don’t. And the benefits of fish oil aren’t limited to the cardiovascular system. It may also reduce the symptoms of inflammatory disorders like arthritis, and some research suggests that it can improve brain function, even preventing Alzheimer’s disease or regulating out-of-whack moods. For those who–for whatever reason–prefer not to eat much fish, the good news is that it’s possible to get the benefits of fish oil from a supplement instead of a fillet.
